Nostalgia and Marketing – Part 1

by Jennifer Fontaine on November 9, 2011

Putting a healthy dose of nostalgia into your marketing can sometimes be a very good thing.  I’ve always understood what nostalgia means, but never looked up the exact definition.  I did today over at merriam-webster.com , and here is one of the definitions I found:

nostalgia: a wistful or excessively sentimental yearning for return to or of some past period or irrecoverable condition; also : something that evokes nostalgia

There are many companies that have been very good at evoking nostalgia. I rarely see a commercial at normal speed on TV these days, but I caught one yesterday that did this, in my humble opinion, perfectly. It reminded me of what a powerful tool this can be and inspired not just this post, but more to come over the next few weeks.

What was the commercial?  Here it is: (note: sentimental types might want to grab a tissue)

Then & Now | 100 Years of Chevrolet | Chevy Centennial

Have you seen good use of nostalgia in marketing lately? Send me the links in the comments.
