Best Possible Marketing Advice I Can Give You

by Jennifer Fontaine on May 24, 2011

This is short and sweet.  What is the most important marketing advice I can give you?

Here’s the answer: have a good product or service. Best Marketing Advice I can Give You

Yes, that simple. Yes, that obvious.

Why is this so neglected by big and small businesses alike?  I’m not quite sure.  I think some are arrogant and think they are great without taking the time to find out for sure. I think some get so caught up in the day-to-day business stuff that they forget to make sure they are doing a good job. Either way, it is a tragic mistake to not be in a constant state of improving your product.

A good product is the key to your marketing plan.  Don’t neglect it.

I agree! I was recently interviewed by a blogger and was asked what advice I would give to other writers that are starting out. In my answer I said that they should do their homework. If the topic they are looking to write about has been done time and time again and they don’t have an innovative spin on it, then find another topic. To your point, the product has to be great, innovative, and unique!
I also think this applies to service companies, yet in a different way. Obviously in most cases (not all), service companies are going to enter markets where there are numerous competitors. In that case, they better be the best of the best and put the customer at the center of everything they do!

Great post!

I realized this early in my career. I did product management and pre-sales for a lot of years. You’ve heard the saying “You can put lipstick on a pig but it’s still a pig”. It’s true. If you don’t start with great product all the slick marketing and rock star sales execs in the world won’t save you.
